R – Interpreter is included on a Statewide Roster of Court Interpreters
To be included on the Statewide Roster a Non-Certified interpreter must have completed the following minimum requirements administered by the State Court Administrator's office: 1) receive a passing score on a written Ethics Test; 2) complete the two-day interpreter Orientation Program; and 3) file a written Affidavit agreeing to be bound by the Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters in the Minnesota State Court System. Non-certified interpreters have not had their interpreting proficiency or fluency in English or any other language evaluated.
B – Interpreter passed Berlitz court interpreter exam
Berlitz court interpreter exam is a language specific test. Level of difficulty varies somewhat from language to language, however in most languages the test is similar to the State Certification Test.
C– Interpreter Certified by Minnesota State Supreme Court
In order to become certified by State Supreme Court, interpreter must previously be included on the Statewide Roster AND successfully pass the rigorous oral proficiency exam, demonstrating a mastery of English and the target language at the level of a highly educated native speaker; and thorough understanding of legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages. In addition, certified interpreters have been tested in the specialized cognitive and motor skills required to interpret in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight interpretation modes; and be able to convey messages accurately, completely and promptly. Certification test is available only in a few languages.
